After the highs of the previous weekend’s Cup exploits, the 2002’s coaches feared a performance dip ahead of the trip to the Borders with a tough game away to improving Gala side. The journey made all the more challenging with Jack C, Danny and Luke all missing and Kornel coming back from illness.
Spartans dominated possession for the entire first half with Gala rarely threatening Nialls goal as the hosts sat deep and looked to seize opportunities on the break.
With the bus parked in front of the Gala goal, the Spartans boys needed to show patience to work openings and to create chances. The breakthrough finally came through Joe with Reece adding a second shortly after.
HT Gala 0-2 Spartans
The game was very stop start and never really got the into a rhythm, frustrating a Spartans side who were keen to build on the first half tempo that earned them a two goal lead.
The coaches asked the boys to move the ball quicker and early in the second half Joe tapped in a third. Like a pack of cards at a magic show, the players were shuffled around shortly after in order to keep things interesting. Nicky added two more high quality goals; one a great volley and another good dribble and finish. Reuben burst through to finish well and to show his strengths.
FT: Gala 0-6 Spartans
It was a comfortable day between the sticks for Niall with his defence enjoying another clean sheet.
Musselburgh Windsor are the opponents next week in John McConnell Memorial Cup 2nd Round and this will be a tougher test and will be the last game before the Christmas break. Kick-off on the Stadium pitch is at 3pm.
